Through the Medicine Rural Placements Program, UBC has diversified the communities in which health professionals practice after graduation. This July, UBC accepted the highest number of postgraduate trainees in the history of the province, and UBC’s Family Medicine Residency Program is now the largest in Canada. After the launch of new Family Medicine residency training sites in Trail, Kamloops, and North Vancouver in the past two years, close to 300 aspiring family physicians are practicing in 18 sites across BC, eight of which are rural. All of these changes have resulted in more than 85 new BC family physicians in the last two years, including 16 in the areas served by the Northern Health Authority. This increase is bringing critical medical care to communities in greatest need while expanding the range of possibilities for new physicians deciding how and where to practice.
